Official or not

Rust's in-game Official tab against everything else

Official servers are the ones in Rust's in-game Official tab: Facepunch's own and its partners', such as RustSpain. Rust Server History keeps that list by hand, by hostname and address. Everything else is a community or modded server.

This is the record of who is on Rust now: 84,917 players on 11,751 public servers, and 1,094 in queues, counted from each server's own report and refreshed every five minutes. Below, the same population is set out by the last day and the last months from stored history, then split by game mode, modded or not, group size, gather rate, region and wipe day. A few servers hold most of the players; the tail is long and quiet.

Before 12 September the history is BattleMetrics' count; from then on it is Rust Server History's own, leaving out the servers on the banlist.

The census tables

How the players split

Every server online is counted once in each breakdown, so each one adds up to the 84,917 players on 11,751 servers.

Census table 2

Modded or not

rates, rules and plugins

Oxide runs on 7,457 servers with 49,255 players, Carbon on 1,890 with 16,324. 2,652 servers with 41,781 players call themselves vanilla.

Census table 3

By game mode

what each server is for

Premium-only servers (296, with 1,615 players) are counted in their mode: premium decides who may join, not how the game plays.

Questions

What visitors ask most, answered from the archive.

How many people are playing Rust right now?

The live count at the top of this page is every player on a public Rust server, taken from server reports and refreshed every five minutes. It moves through the day, so compare it with the last-day figure from stored history rather than with a single reading. Queued players are counted separately.

Why does this differ from the Steam player count?

Steam counts everyone with Rust open: menus, loading screens and servers that do not list publicly. This entry counts players on public servers only, which is why it can be split by mode, rate and region. The gap between the two numbers is not recorded here.

When is the Rust player count at its highest?

The daily peak on the last-day chart is set by the European evening, and the time is given in UTC. Australian evening falls in the UK morning, and the US east coast evening falls after midnight in the UK. Use the peak figure to judge a server's population against the busiest hour, not the quietest.

Do modded servers hold more players than vanilla?

Modded servers hold more players in total, mostly because there are far more of them; the split by mode is live and moves as servers report. Per-server, the ranking in the stored history shows which entries carry the largest populations. The vanilla and modded lists are kept separately.
